Marvin Gaye's "You're the Man"

In 1972, Marvin Gaye appears to have been at a crossroads, not sure what direction to take next. He’d followed up his hugely successful What’s Going On? album with a soundtrack to Trouble Man.

At first, his focus was an album of socio-political songs, kicked off with the title track “You’re the Man.” However, when the title song didn’t become a crossover hit when released as a single, enthusiasm for a full album appears to have waned. Plus, Gaye seems to have been brimming with lots of different ideas.

In the book “Mercy, Mercy Me: The Art, Loves and Demons of Marvin Gaye,” author Michael Eric Dyson writes, “As [Harry] Weinger sorted through the tapes vault, he was bewildered by the huge amount of material. It became clear that Marvin had many false starts and pursued a number of directions – and even another album – before settling on the songs that became Let’s Get It On.”

Indeed, besides tracks for the You’re the Man album, Gaye also recorded instrumentals, and songs written by Willie Hutch, and even began a Christmas album that Motown put on its schedule (only one holiday single was produced). There were also plans for a duet album with Diana Ross. 1972 was a busy year.

The result is that there are basically three partially created albums between Trouble Man and Let’s Get It On. My first attempt was to create You’re the Man with the six tracks that were known to have originally been planned for it and fill in the blanks with three instrumentals. But the more I looked into what had been recorded, I thought maybe there was something bigger and better possible. You can arrive at a surprisingly good double album if all the tracks are gathered and carefully assembled.

SIDE A
1. Running from Love, Part 1
2. I’m Going Home (Move)
3. You’re the Man (Parts 1 & 2)
4. I’m Gonna Give You Respect

SIDE B
1. This World is Rated X
2. Sad Tomorrows
3. Try It, You’ll Like It
4. Checking Out (Double Clutch)
5. We Can Make It Baby

SIDE C
1. Woman of the World
2. My Love is Growing
3. Cakes
4. You are That Special One
5. Mandota

SIDE D
1. Where are We Going?
2. Symphony
3. Running from Love, Part 2
4. Piece of Clay

I book-ended the album with the two parts of "Running from Love." The angrier-sounding version kicks off the album, and the moodier version ends it, with "Piece of Clay" as an epilogue. The social and political songs remain, along with more personal songs and one instrumental punctuating each of the four sides.

Gaye’s popularity was certainly strong enough to support a double album, and “Woman of the World” "Where Are We Going?" and “Piece of Clay” could have been strong contenders for singles. It seems to me to be a missed opportunity. One final thing – the inclusion of “Sad Tomorrows” is kind of a cheat. It was a non-album B-side to “Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)” from 1971. However, I needed one more song and it fit well, I think.

Most tracks are available on the extended versions of What's Going On? and Let's Get It On.

I can’t take any credit for the cool cover shown at the top – I found that on a blog and was impressed with how great it looks. I also made an attempt at a cover, using a similar photo from the "You're the Man" single sleeve, but as you can see below it didn't come out anywhere near as nice.

Here's the album via a YouTube playlist.

  1. Nice. This might be one of the few cases where a double album is justified.

  2. Thanks folks for reading and commenting. I assembled this in iTunes and listen to it regularly now. I highly recommend it. Got other entries planned for every Sunday through early February, and a few floating in my head for after that.

  3. Presuming I can use the expanded LGiO from 2001 and either the 2001 WGO or the 40th Anniversary from 2011?

    1. I'm guessing *not* all the tracks are available on the 'physical' extended versions you cite, since I could not find all the tracks, so if possible, since I am really interested in checking this album out, could you provide me a list of the tracks to purchase from iTunes to compile it? Thanks in advance, I hope LOL

    4. Queries:

      1) Sad Tomorrows, original single version from WGO 2001 or original mono version from WGO 2011?
      2) From the 2014 WAWG?/WotW single, there is also a version of WAWG? on the single, listed as previously unreleased mix, but you list the one from LGIO 2001, are they the same version?
      3) The World Is Rated X [LGIO 2001] is listed as an alternate mix, but there is no original mix on this album, and I notice the actual album it appears on, Motown Remembers Marvin Gaye: Never Before Released Masters, was done with additions he might not have approved, so I presume I can ignore the alternative part and assume this is how he would have presented the song himself had he released it on YTM had it happened?

    5. 4) Checking Out (Double Clutch) also appears on the 2011 WGO, do you still suggest the one from The Master 1961-1984?

    6. 1. Used original mono version as that's what I had. Not sure they're different.
      2. They may be different, but I used the 2001 version.
      3. Yes, I think the alt mix is closer to original. Haven't actually heard the other version
      4. You're right, I used the 2011 version.

  4. I made a mix of music recorded in 1972 by Marvin called "You're The Man '72". I think most of the music was recorded in 1972 but it's a nice addition after What's Going On but before Let's Get It On.

    1. You're The Man - Pts. I & II
    2. Woman of the World
    3. Trouble Man
    4. Piece of Clay
    5. Where are we Going?
    6. I Want to Come Home For Christmas
    7. I'm Gonna Give You Respect
    8. I'm Going Home
    9. Christmas In the City
    10. The World is Rated X
    11. T Stands for Trouble - Bonus Track

  5. Late to the party, but better late than.... I just came across your blog, but how awesome is this? :)

I also took a stab in re-creating this album, somewhere in the 2nd half of 2014, after I've gotten the release of the Marvin/Donald Byrd two-fer "Where Are We Going"/"Woman Of The World", put it up on Soundcloud after, but when my account got deleted (copyright bs), I somehow never got around to put it up again..

That said, I might do it soon.

My tracklist has a lot of common with yours, however, I kept it as a single album and stayed away as much as I could from his love songs, as a lot of the material he was making around '72 was either politically or socially engaged, his mindset very much in that direction.

I reckon it's because his lead single "You're The Man" tanked, he somehow got disinterested in further pursuing that direction. Rumor has it though, it was Berry Gordy and his team who were responsible for its lukewarm response, as he didn't want Marvin to be so overtly political and called on radio stations to either drop it or put it low on the playlist.... Not 100% sure, but it doesn't sound so far-fetched either.

    My tracklist was as follows:

    Side One:

    1. You're The Man pt.1&2
    2. The World Is Rated X
    3. Woman Of The World
    4. Where Are We Going?
    5. You're The Man pt.3
    6. I'm Gonna Give You Respect

    Side Two:

    1. Song #3
    2. You're The Man pt.4
    3. Piece Of Clay
    4. Checking Out (Double Clutch)
    5. I'm Going Home

    Limited Bonus 7-Inch /CD Bonus Tracks ;) :

    Side A:

    1. Sad Tomorrows

    Side B:

    1. The Lord's Prayer
    2. God Is Love (original version)

I made the title track my common thread throughout the whole album, by incorporating all versions of it, titling those pts to 1 to 4, but in reality the latter two parts are the alternate versions from the "Let's Get It On" deluxe box set.

Like I mentioned, I tried to stay away from the love songs, but "Woman Of The World" needs to be on it, as its from the same sessions as "Where Are We Going" (there's also a 3rd, still unreleased, track from those sessions, the title I forgot).

"I'm Gonna Give You Respect", the other love song, is from the batch of songs with Willie Hutch; don't have my Deluxe Set on me, but is, if I recall, from 1973, but I love that tune so much, I included it. Also to round up the project, along with my favorite instrumental from that period "Song #3" (which, presumably, has Marvin playing the drums). The rest is all recorded around the time of the "You're The Man" sessions, so there's a good chance these would all have been on the album, should it've gotten a proper release.

I can't tell you how great it is to see you and a lot of people delve into these geekish kind of things, by recreating albums and play with music in these ways :). I did quite a few of these "fictive albums" in the past 5 years: Marvin, but also Stevie, Earth, Wind & Fire, Jessica Cleaves, Michael Jackson... And a batch of hip hop: A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Gang Starr, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Wu-Tang... And still have some more lined up... Time being the enemy ;). If you're (or anybody else) is interested, let me know.

Love it to see kindred spirits being everywhere :)

    Thnx for reading,

    Lee

    1. Interesting idea of recurring versions of "You're the Man." I made a single album version initially, but felt in the end that a double album captured a lot of different emotions and ideas that made it better.

  6. Hot diggedy damn, they've just announced an offical release of the album. I prefer the album cover you chose over theirs, but starting with the title track feels right to me because What's Going On, Let's Get It On and Hear, My Dear does it as well.

    1. Good point! I had originally thought of starting the album with the single, but playing around with the songs I liked starting the epic double album with the instrumental to set the mood, and then "I'm Going Home (Move)" as setting the focus. But obviously no concept is right or wrong. :)

  7. Mine goes like this:

    Side A
    1. You're the Man (version 1)
    2. The World is Rated X
    3. Symphony
    4. Woman of the World

    Side B
    5. Where Are we Going
    6. My Last Chance
    7. I'm Going Home (Move)
    8. You're the Man (version 2)
    9. Piece of Clay

Imo, this would have been another masterpiece between the WGO and LGIO albums.

    1. Cool! I don't think I would have included a holiday song, but obviously no reason you can't. But isn't the title, "I Want to Come Home for Christmas"?

  12. This is excellent. I could definitely see MG following up What's Going On with a sprawling double album.
